This is a blast from the past from 25 years ago–I remember it very fondly! Phineas Bogg is a Voyager–a person who is supposed to move through time and give history a push from time to time so that the valid things grasp region. The machine that he uses malfunctions a lot, he doesn’t have a lot of knowledege about history, and he accidentally ends up in the bedroom of a boy named Jeffrey Jones in 1982, an orphan who knows a lot about history. He ends up traveling with Bogg, going from one adventure to the next. Not as heavy handed and preachy as Quantum Leap (which I loved, too) –a fun series, sizable family entertainment, kids should like it.

One thing I remember is that whenever Meeno and Jon-Erik did interviews, they always spoke as if they were an equal team. Jon-Erik never spoke of Meeno as impartial a kid. On cloak, they had a very nice relationship. The kid’s cute, the guy’s hunky, and the adventures are fun.
Generally in each episode, the voyagers fall into one scenario, leave at the first commercial shatter to another, solve the second dilemma, then occupy knowledge from that second scenario relieve to the first to solve the initial spot. Some of the links are that of situations (Spartacus and Tubbman have slavery in popular), and others involve learning a trick to fetch out of the first (Salem and Houdini)

Just the straight facts about the DVD:
1. Five episodes per disc. Four discs = all 20 fresh episodes.
2. Although the footage shows a journey of age with a some graininess, it is great worthy more crisp than any VHS / Beta recording from attend in the day. (To give you an plan — you can freeze frame and read the months and numbers on the omni!) Plus, the colors search for attractive great for an 80s note that sat in the archives.
3. Sound is quality is fine, especially for what was originally recorded in mono — no declare or the like.
4. One reviewer on here complained that the commercial breaks were badly edited out. That is erroneous. The DVD transfer is clearly sourced from the fresh recordings. It is simply a stylistic feature of many older shows that commercial breaks were made to be very obvious; such breaks seem clunky to our eyes because they lack perfect continuity. (I suspect that that was to allow “leg room” for local commercials to be cued in / synced by an engineer in a local location room.)

What a knowing film. It’s not overly clever. It’s a touch formulaic. It’s even a bit laughable in places (Bette Midler will NEVER pass as a man by penciling on a moustache and wearing trousers), and the fashion will perform you wince.
There is something about this comedy that makes me giggle. I don’t know why – is it the device Midler and Long ham it up? Is it the laughable girl bonding thing? Is it the crap but hilarious jokes? The bit where Long is shot, even though it’s corny, calm makes me judge ‘Ahh…she did it’ (You’ll know what I mean when you gawk the movie) .
All in all, you’ll be hard pushed to procure such a droll yet gleaming film. I heartily recommend watching it, and even buying the video (if it ever becomes available) .
I admire this movie. It is a classic and one of my all time favorites and I was thrilled when I heard it was going to be released on DVD. The transfer is grand as is the sound. My only complaint is that on the DVD package it says the Theatrical Trailer is included on the DVD. It is not. THe only menu options are scene access and audio set-up. Probably a boo-boo on the Buena Vista people. Oh well. Thats all

The Boondock Saints Review

It seems like the only procedure anyone hears about this movie, its either from fanatic word of mouth or from seeing it sitting in Blockbusters. Thats a shame, because this first outing by director Troy Duffy is an extremely chilly film that deserves all the attention it can win.
Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus play two advantageous ole Irish Catholic boys in Boston, who one day catch sick of the corruption in the city and start a bloody crusade to wipe it out. Willem DaFoe plays the FBI agent hot on their move, who is torn between bringing the mysterious vigilantes to justice, or joining their crusade.
The film is, simply save, icy. Its one of the only movies that actually get going to church watch cold. Don’t be fooled by the description, however; this is not an action movie. Do not request blazing gun battles with crazy angles and MTV like editing. This is a film about morality, doing what one thinks is proper, and having codes of honour. It’s about all those things, and how conclude they may sometimes collect to walking the edge between expedient and imperfect.

The two actors who play the Irish vigilantes are tremendous in their roles, playing the boys not as superheroes, but as regular joes with a tall chip on their shoulder. A nice twist in the film is DaFoe’s portrayel of the FBI agent, who also happens to be gratified. He plays him as a mountainous character without being tempted to dip into stereotypes. Huge job by the versatile actor.
This is definately a movie not to be missed. If you are fortunate to recognize this in your video store, pick it out and bask in.
It only takes a few minutes to contrivance a comparison between Troy Duffy’s “The Boondock Saints” and almost any Quentin Tarentino film. As I watched this breathtaking movie, I snickered to myself over realizing this shrimp fact. I figured few others would execute the connection. Boy, was I gross! It seems that anyone who has seen “Boondock Saints” immediately thinks of “Pulp Fiction” or “Reservoir Dogs.” Moreover, a lot of people do not like the notion of Duffy ripping off such a suitable American icon. Perhaps they have forgotten that Tarentino has based his entire career on borrowing or outright ripping off ideas from 1960s and 1970s cinema. I could care less whether Duffy imitated “Pulp Fiction” or whether he arrived at this opinion on his enjoy. Hollywood routinely begs, borrows, and steals in an pain to effect a buck. The current trend of remaking older films is only one aspect of this philosophy, so complaining about some filmmaker copying a specific style is a moot point. “The Boondock Saints” is an enormously arresting scheme to exhaust a couple of hours and, despite a few flaws, may effect a cult spot rivaling anything made by Quentin Tarentino. This is how it should be.
Connor and Murphy MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus respectively) are two Irish brothers who employ their days drinking at the local pub and working in a local meatpacking plant. They don’t do distinguished with their free time outside of lounging around their filthy loft and hanging around with unbalanced people like their friend David Rocco, a minor criminal who longs to join the local branch of the mafia. Pains rears its frightening head when some Russian gangsters fade into the neighborhood and threaten to end down the neighborhood bar. After a fistfight leads to a couple of killings in an alley, the boys realize they may be in a place of distress with local law enforcement. Actually, they are in more distress than they realize at first when an FBI agent by the name of Paul Smecker arrives on the scene. The inept local cops stand around throwing out all sorts of strange, implausible theories about these corpses in the alleyway, but Smecker moves in and figures it all out in an enormously hilarious and ingenious intention. By slapping on some headphones pumping out classical music and prancing around the scene checking things out, Smecker tells the cops what happened, when it happened, and who probably did it. Certain enough, the MacManus boys sheepishly reach at the local cop shop, bloodied and bandaged from their tussle with the Russkies, and confess to the crime.

Fortunately for Connor and Murphy, Agent Smecker takes a proper shine to these gregarious youngsters and releases them from jail. After all, the whole incident was merely a case of self-defense gone horribly bloody. But something peculiar happens to the MacManus brothers after this incident; they suddenly consider they receive a calling from God to rid the streets of criminals. Checking in at the local armory of the Irish Republican Army (this is Boston, after all) and arming themselves to the teeth, Connor and Murphy exhaust information gleaned from their encounter with the low-level mafia goons to stage a mission against the bosses of the Russian Mob. Other jobs soon follow, all apparently sanctioned and sanctified by the Almighty. The boys are so successful they soon way in the assistance of David Rocco, who, with his big knowledge of Boston’s underworld, provides a list of criminals who deserve to die. As the body count rises, Smecker comes closer to learning the identities of these homegrown vigilantes. The fact that the FBI agent undergoes a crisis of conscience over the crimes–he lickety-split realizes these murders are the work of citizens fed up with crime–leads him to secretly abet the men responsible for the killings. Throw in a bunch of Mafia thugs, adult film star Ron Jeremy as a doomed hoodlum, a vicious, mystical killer named “Il Duce” (played by Billy Connolly, calm atoning for “Head of the Class”), stylish gunplay, and an exploding cat and you have all the makings of this favorable movie.
“The Boondock Saints” is a film about vigilantism and whether that activity is ever justifiable, although that theme seems to go for most of the movie. The conclusion, too, ends up being honest a small too implausible, but getting there is a boatload of fun. The best things about Duffy’s film are the whipsaw lickety-split dialogue, the hilarious running gags, and Willem Dafoe as Agent Paul Smecker. Dafoe especially deserves accolades for his portrayal of a conflicted FBI agent whose sympathies eventually turn to the MacManus brothers. His procedure of solving crimes, especially the shootout between Il Duce and the two vigilantes, is not only brilliantly executed but a wonder to glimpse. Moreover, Smecker’s interactions with the local Irish cops provide endless opportunities for tall dialogue and hilarious jokes.
Regrettably, a bit of overacting at positive points of the film hasty annoys, as does the failure to provide anything more than lip service to vigilantism and how it pertains to our ultra violent world, but “The Boondock Saints” is so distinguished fun despite these flaws that you will hardly discover them. The DVD includes many extras, such as significant deleted scenes, a commentary by Troy Duffy, and a widescreen presentation. There’s even talk of an impending sequel, although the absence of the Willem Dafoe character, if the reports are correct, could cause distinguished problems. There is not any other arrangement to say it: if you have not seen “The Boondock Saints,” hasten, do not toddle, to the local video store and capture or rent a copy today.

I trekked some distance (via bus) down to some theatre in Hollywood (I’m from another fragment of L.A.) because it wasn’t showing anywhere nearby. I wanted to spy it *that* dreadful. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
When I finally got a DVD player, one of the first DVDs I got was “Local Hero”. It’s definitely on my “must-have” list.
The fable is simple — materialistic Peter Reigert is sent to a petite Scottish village to try to negotiate a land deal for his rich, eccentric boss (Burt Lancaster, who is outstanding) . He arrives in Scotland as a guy who is only obsessed with business deals, his car, and his posessions attend in Texas, but soon he learns there are more notable things in life. The townsfolk are absolutely unbelievable, all in their beget fresh, eclectic intention. Denis Lawson particularly shines as “jack of all trades” who holds several positions in the community, including innkeeper.

The oddness and beauty of this film takes time to unfold, and it is best fair to sit succor and examine it happen. Everyone seems to have a fable, everyone is eccentric in some plot. I especially loved Burt Lancaster and his interaction with his “therapist”, who takes the job *far* too seriously. Lancaster plays one of the most likeable and fresh characters onscreen. Reigert too, is endearing. He so wants to be “normal” that he can’t even admit that he might spend a shampoo for dry or greasy hair. “Normal. EXTRA normal.”, he says, when asked what kind of shampoo he needs. What an uptight guy he seems at first, but he soon mends his ways.
The win by Sign Knopfler is among one of my favorites too. I can play it and it brings abet the whole atmosphere and mood of this film. The musical share played at the demolish of the movie is heart-wrenching and brings benefit the sweetness of the raze of this glorious movie every time I hear it.
Director Bill Forsythe created an absolute gem in this movie. A must-have in *every* film collection. Absolutely righteous.
Knox Oil rules Houston. The Knox headquarters tower over the Houston skyline, and KNOX radio brings Houston its weather and traffic describe. Knox Oil is owned by Felix Happer (Burt Lancaster), whose father bought the company from its Scottish-born founder; but unfortunately neglected to change the name to “Happer Oil.” Now Knox Oil needs to bag a site for a refinery in Scotland, and the most appropriate position happens to be a village called Furness, far up on the Northern Scottish glide. And the Knox people don’t win no prisoners – they determine to simply go ahead and select the whole village. The man they’re sending to Scotland to negotiate is Mac MacIntyre (Peter Riegert), whose presumably Scottish roots are going to invent it easy for him to bond with the locals and conclude the deal (actually, his family is from Hungary and changed their names to MacIntyre because “they idea that’s America”) .

Reluctantly Mac takes off (he would noteworthy have preferred to handle the matter over the wires), bringing an electrically locked briefcase, a contemplate beeping a signal for “conference time in Houston,” pictures of his Porsche 930 (”I got migraine headaches when I was aloof driving a Chevy”) and the tough-nosed, textbook negotiating skills of a Texas oil man. He is not very impressed with the backwater ways of Furness at first – although he does instantly leer that there’s “a lotta landscape here.” But slowly and inexorably, his attitude changes. Walking along the beach, his steps grow longer and slower, more contemplative. He starts to derive shells. His business suit makes design for a woolen sweater. And his treasured examine dies a tiresome death as it tries to signal “conference time in Houston” one last time from its underwater grave. Instead of expeditiously closing the deal and leaving again, Mac has let the location obtain to him. And he is beginning to regret what this deal is going to mean for this space – nothing other than its total destruction. It will consume a surprise visit from Felix Happer himself, prompted not by Mac’s reports on the progress of the deal but rather, by his descriptions of the wonders of the Scottish nighttime sky, to bring about a decisive turn of events. For Happer’s apt fancy is not the oil business but astronomy; and before Mac left, Happer has charged him with the search for a comet because “the constellation of Virgo is very prominent in the sky suitable now in Scotland,” wherefore Mac needs to “sustain an contemplate on Virgo,” to encourage Happer realize his lifelong dream, the discovery of “Happer’s Comet.” (”You do know what a comet is? ” the tycoon asks, unbiased to gain obvious. “I feel clear I’d know one if I saw one,” a slightly flabbergasted Mac replies.)

There is Danny Oldsen (Peter Capaldi), Mac’s Knox Oil companion from Aberdeen, who falls in fancy with a local marine biologist (Jenny Seagrove) with her absorb designs for Furness Bay, which have nothing to do with a refinery and everything with the bay’s preservation. There is Viktor (Christopher Rozycki), a fisherman from Murmansk who has discovered capitalism on the remote Scottish North Sea shores and routinely stops by to visit his friends there and check in on the investments Gordon Urquhart has made for him. There is Reverend Macpherson (Gyearbuor Asante), who despite his last name is about as Scottish as the Lone Star in the Texas flag, but whose erstwhile presumably African accent, after years of living in Furness, has nevertheless taken an unmistakably Scottish tinge. And there is the local villagefolk; wily, earthbound, unpretentious and hard working, nevertheless almost over-eager to cash in; and far from stubbornly clinging to their roots, soon finding themselves discussing the relative merits of a Rolls Royce and a Maserrati (measured by the cars’ respective utility in transporting sheep) and musing that “it ain’t easy being rich.” Except, that is, for Ben Knox (!) (Fulton Mackay), who owns an distinguished share of the beach and who will not give up the land given to an ancestor of his by the king himself for “turning a thing for him” (killing the king’s brother) centuries ago; not even for the promise of a couple of miles of pristine beach in Hawaii.

The movie’s dialogue is as unpretentious and understated as it is witty – Glasgow-born director Bill Forsyth was responsible for the script, too, and it shows. But the film’s single most outstanding feature is nature itself; the rugged cliffs, endless and ever-changing skies, windswept, forlorn beaches and stormy sea of Scotland’s northern skim. And the brooding, gloomy mood of those beaches, cliffs, misty glens and mountains is perfectly captured by the music collected by another son of Scotland, Heed Knopfler (like Forsyth born in Glasgow), whose very first film acquire remains one of his most poignant and best-known to date – there probably isn’t a Knopfler fan out there who doesn’t instantly look the movie’s theme song “Going Home,” even if he has never seen the movie itself. “Local Hero” is Forsyth’s and Knopfler’s declaration of appreciate to their native land; a humble, evocative appeal for its preservation which merits every bit of attention it has (belatedly) received.

Too old for Hamlet and too young for Lear–what’s an ambitious actor to do? Play the Devil, of course. Jack Nicholson did it in The Witches of Eastwick; Robert De Niro did it in Angel Heart (as Louis Cyphre–get it?). In The Devil’s Advocate Al Pacino takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly relishes his chance to raise hell. He’s a New York lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting offers of power, sex, and money. Think of the story as a twist on John Grisham’s The Firm, with the corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is wooden, and therefore doesn’t seem to have much of a soul to lose, but he’s really just our excuse to meet the devil. Pacino’s the main attraction, gleefully showing off his–and the Antichrist’s–chops at perpetrating menace and mayhem. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford (Against All Odds, Dolores Claiborne), who provides alternate-track commentary for the movie itself, plus a dozen deleted scenes. Also note: du to a settlement with artist Frederick Hart over the movie’s use of a sculpture resembling his Ex Nihilo in Washington’s National Cathedral, future releases of the film will be altered. –Jim Emerson

The knowing yet innocent face of Jean-Pierre Leaud, the 14-year-old star of The 400 Blows, is the heartbreaking core of Francois Truffaut’s most intimate film. As Antoine Doinel, Leaud begins his career as director Truffaut’s alter-ego, a young boy neglected by his mother and stepfather who, to cover his absence at school, tells a lie that leads him to run away from home and end up in reform school. There’s nothing remarkable or surprising about the plot; the power of this film comes from how completely it draws you into Antoine’s life. Antoine is a vivid, natural presence, one of the most compelling collaborations between a writer/director and an actor. The movie seems to capture him as he lives. Antoine endures his parent’s indifference, humiliations at school, deprivation and juvenile delinquncy–yet the movie never feels pitying or condescending, as if it were trying to rub your nose in Antoine’s suffering. On the contrary: His resilience is what grabs you, his refusal to be broken down as he struggles towards a more adult understanding of the world. Truffaut and Leaud made many excellent films together (Day for Night, Two English Girls), including further chapters in Antoine’s life (Bed and Board, Stolen Kisses), but none were quite as simple, rich, and devastatingly potent as The 400 Blows. An indictment of the British class system dressed up like a Ralph Lauren ad, Another Country is the movie that made a very young and very gorgeous Rupert Everett a star. Whatever other ideas it has knocking around its head (and there are quite a lot of them), director Marek Kanievska’s adaptation of Julian Mitchell’s play is first and foremost a star vehicle for Everett, who played the openly gay main character with a vigor, flair, and smoldering appeal that was rarely seen onscreen in the early ’80s. Everett is Guy Bennett, a charming, confident schoolboy in 1930s England who yearns to climb to the top of the social strata at his Eton-like school. His ambitions, however, are waylaid by the young and equally gorgeous James Harcourt (Cary Elwes), with whom he begins a passionate yet secret affair. Soon, however, Guy finds that balancing his love and his ambition is a no-win situation, and that no matter how hard he bucks against it, the ages-old traditional structures of British class and etiqutte won’t yield in his wake. Added to all this E.M. Still, holding it all together is the sublime Everett, who took this persona of the classy, beautiful, passionate, British gay man and ran with it throughout the ’80s and ’90s.
