Jimmy Stewart’s career was doing gigantic in 1950, and hardly needed a boost, but nonetheless, he agreed to appear in Anthony Mann’s Western WINCHESTER ‘73, and the always reliable Stewart’s career took a original and more complex path. In the 1950s, Stewart would originate eight movies with Mann, and five of them–WINCHESTER ‘73 (1950), BEND OF THE RIVER (1952), THE NAKED SPUR (1953), THE FAR COUNTRY (1954), and THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955) –would be Westerns. These five Westerns fully rival the series of Westerns that John Wayne made with John Ford. They presented the public with a unique Jimmy Stewart, one consistently beset with tragedy, often driven to the edge of what human beings can contain. And sometimes, as in THE NAKED SPUR, Stewart would describe a man so driven by the difficulties that life has thrust upon him, that his greatest struggle isn’t with his human enemy so mighty as it is with his highly tenuous grip upon sanity.
Apart from the Native American extras, this film has only five characters: Jimmy Stewart as the bounty hunter seeking a man to derive a reward that will allow him to repurchase the ranch he has lost; Janet Leigh as a young girl who has been taken up by an outlaw; Robert Ryan as the outlaw Stewart is after; Ralph Meeker as a dishonorably discharged cavalry officer; and Millard Mitchell as the broken-down timer whose exact dream is finding a mother lode. It is a enormous cast, and the actors all work together in suitable fashion. Stewart and Leigh had noble careers, but both Ryan and Meeker were astronomical actors who never seemed to manage to have the kinds of careers you would have expected them to have. Meeker would turn in radiant performances in Stanley Kubrick’s PATHS OF GLORY (easily one of Kubrick’s greatest films) and Robert Aldrich’s KISS ME DEADLY, as Mike Hammer, but all in all, he never seemed to gather the kinds of roles his talent would seem to require. Nonetheless, he is sterling in this film.
There is actually a sixth member of the cast: the San Juan Mountains in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. No director of Westerns was better at integrating the rugged outdoors with his films than Anthony Mann. We all associate, of course, Monument Valley with the Westerns of John Ford, but in Ford’s films the astounding landscapes functioned more like decoration. They were backdrops for the stories being told. But in Anthony Mann’s films, the land itself was an integral allotment of the action. That is especially lawful of THE NAKED SPUR. Both at the beginning and the waste of the movie, the hunters contemplate their prey in a locale higher than they are at. But throughout, the land is palpably a fragment of the film.

This film also excels at combining psychological complexity with mountainous action sequences. It is a very dynamic movie. Virtually every camera shot catches characters who already in motion. Almost never do we peer a slit with a static character who then begins to fade. Instead, every chop finds someone already in the act of doing something. Yet, distinguished of the appeal of the film lies in the psychological and emotional tensions between the different characters.
In other words, anyone who loves Jimmy Stewart, grand Westerns, or impartial flat out tall cinema, needs to perceive this film.
James Stewart was a different man after he returned from World War II. Beginning in 1950 with “Winchester ‘73″, Stewart and Mann made Westerns that belied many of the typical genre films of that era. Stewart’s heroes, instead of being stalwart, good and likable, were often times somewhat shady, base, and not always likable. Of all of their stout Westerns, including “Winchester ‘73,” “The Man From Laramie,” “Bend of The River,” and others, probably the best film of their collaboration was “The Naked Spur,” a epic about a vicious, psychopathic outlaw captured by a group competing with each other to regain the bounty on the outlaw’s head. The outlaw, played by be pleased and glee by Robert Ryan, uses the group’s collective and individual greed against them in a shriek to race.
Stewart’s performance is spectacular, ranging wildly from bitter to sympathetic, nervous to resolute, and the rest of the cast is also dynamic and evenly matched. This film was was well worth the wait for DVD, and should be purchased by all Stewart-lovers, Western-lovers, and Ryan-lovers, and perhaps one day, there will be many more Mann-lovers, because he was one of Hollywood’s best directors, and he is largely forgotten today.

You’ll procure the leisurely the scenes from Spielberg, the actors, photographers, and the producers. In today’s film world this movie could be made rather easily, but succor then you’ll discover the huge undertaking that went into this production. The movie itself, of course, is fair astonishing. At one point Spielberg says that the shark is the star, but the scenes on the boat will note you 3 stars at the top of their game. The sound quality is outstanding and trusty, but I do have one complaint…. on the 5.1 DTS their isn’t remarkable activity from the wait on 2 speakers. The sound coming from the front 3 is spacious, but they could have done more. This movie is honest as suspenseful as when I saw it in the mid-seventies. I hadn’t really watched it in awhile and I had forgotten the outstanding acting performances by Scheider, Dreyfuss, and Shaw. Shaw’s USS Indianapolis speech is about as edifying as it gets, while Scheider’s everyman performance really rings correct. You’ll relish this DVD and it’s at a gracious sign. A edifying bargain. Choose it!
This movie is a credit to everyone associated with it, from the stellar cast of actors and actresses to the direction by Steven Speilberg to the fresh narrative (a new) and screenwriting by Peter Benchley. This is a riviting sage superbly told, with good cinematography and special effects, and a scary soundtrack that builds the edge of mystery to a crescendo each time it musically announces the shark’s appearence.
The opinion for the movie is deceptively simple; a broad white shark with a fond taste for the sweet taste of human flesh is patrolling the water off Amity Island (read Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard) and terrorizing the summer tourist population. Inject into this some appealing and unusual subplots regarding a burned-out city cop and unlikely undersung hero, a brainy, affable but basically misunderstood young marine biologist, and a wonderfully crusty old-fashioned mariner turned professional shark fisherman and you have the recipe for an provocative rollercoaster saunter.
This movie is a original classic, one with a young Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and the gradual Robert Shaw. The epic arc this time introduces more governmental (insider/political) themes that design you quiz who is ultimately pulling the strings.
For this second season the Animation director (or one of them) shifted region to character designer and shared that function with the character designer for the second movie. There are interviews of both of these on the second DVD. My impression of the results of this is that the original character models are both more “realistic” or detailed, while some have a runt more of an anime compose to them. It amounts to more variety which can sometimes be a diminutive awkward in my view.

Contrary to what was stated in the “lousy” review here, the SAC: 2nd Gig team did not have worthy cross-over with the Ghost in the Shell: Innocence movie team so you can’t say that they lacked resources. A serial TV series is not going to arrive out trustworthy to a 2hour movie production.
The nitty gritty:
If you liked the first season, you will care for 2nd Gig, the plotlines are getting more intricate and each episode ends with either a cramped revelation to the whole arc or a cliff-hanger. This makes it difficult to peruse these discs in spurts.I did not gather the background artwork noticably worse than the first season, it is darker, however, but this enhances the unique storyline. This storyline with the refugees and political manipulation of covert government agencies mirrors our possess time more and the background art seems appropriate for this. This continuation is a runt less Sci-Fi and a cramped more mystery-oriented. I glean the background art to actually be more detailed and varied than in the first season. I must have blinked and missed the blurry section?
The sophistication in this series lies more with the stories and episodic increments that further the over-all account arc than in the artwork. Withhold in mind that this was made for television and had different obstacles to overcome. I do wish, however that the makers had the time/money to match the artistic beauty of the Ghost in the Shell movies.
If you are fresh to the Stand Alone Complex series, jumping in here will mean missing the character development that ran through the first season and the significance of the cyber bodies and brain technology. The team now, after rising from their dismantling at the raze of the first season, is not taking their strength and existence for granted.

After reuniting with the cast of characters from the cliff hanger Feast II – the midgets, the awesomely topless biker chicks, Say & Slasher, Honey Pie & The Bartender, we soon net a few sterling additions to the movie; one named S*#tkicker and another named Jean Claude Seagal. Yes, Jean Claude Seagal. If there is a cooler name, and a more hilariously overt parody of already lampooned characters (SNL and Exasperated TV skits don’t count), then I have never seen one. Together they add fair enough suave machismo and unpredictable catastrophes (“It’s fair a flesh injure”) to support the movie rolling along.
The most famous aspect of all three Feast movies is the potpourri of gore, wisecracks, blood, and extremely heavy-handed WTF scenes. Whereas the classic money shot of Feast II was the baby volleyball scene, this installment challenges and treats the viewer with two classic scenes. An alien colonoscopy that vividly displays a fecal matter covered human head via the first ever corn-hole cam gushes out of the alien excretory system, bouncing on the ground like a half deflated basketball. The other scene can best be described as a cross-species, homosexual, inter-racial, box-car, prison anal rape…and I’ll leave it at that.

An attempt at the rest: the biker chicks are the BAMFs, a prophet with cerebral palsy, a bizarre alien/zombie lair with strobe lights and a sweet techno soundtrack, trendy camera usage (night vision and shaky camera), front kick decapitations, and a classic mariachi ending during the credits that attempts to summarize the ridiculous awesomeness of this trilogy.
The best procedure to contemplate of this movie is the dismay genre version of Napoleon Dynamite: it is so over-the-top in terms of absurdity and grotesque-iness it will either buy a while to sink in (for the certain reviewers here) or not at all (for all the negative commentors) . “The Witches” is one of my well-liked films. The film combines the stout filmmaking talents of Nicholas Roeg with the wonderworking of Jim Henson and an unforgettable performance from Angelica Huston. Every time I witness this film, I score something current to like about it.
Since I have seen the film numerous times, I was a bit disappointed that the DVD did not maintain any special features, such as a commentary from the filmmaker or one of the actors. Other than the most basic chapter selection, the DVD does not offer any of the bonuses that one would like to peer. Fortunately, the film itself is so suitable that it is worthwhile to seize this disc in spite of the imperfect packaging.
From the very beginning of the film, we are thrown into an imaginative world where witches reside in literally every microscopic village and where no child is qualified in any country. As the credits roll across the cover, Roeg treats us to a pace on a broomstick, to a witch’s-eye belief of the frozen Scandinavian countryside.

The film then introduces us to Luke and his grandmother, the protagonists of this epic. We learn that the grandmother has long been fighting the witches and even has lost section of her finger in the struggles. After tragedy strikes the young boy’s parents, the pair fade to England, which is literally infested with witches. Fortunately, Luke has been well-warned how to discover them and can play safely in his tree house when other children would be in grave anxiety.
The enjoyable irony compounds when the grandmother takes Luke to a seaside resort hotel for her convalescence. It is the trusty time when all the witches of England are meeting under the screen of the Royal Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Children. In a closed-door session, the witches select their wigs and poor, yet practical, shoes, letting us eye them in all their repulsiveness. The Stout High Witch (played to perfection by Angelica Huston) reveals her idea to turn all the children of England into mice. Of course, the witch’s belief goes astray, and tables are turned on all the witches in one of the most palatable scenes in all of unique cinema. Every time I survey it, I mediate to myself how remarkable fun it would be to build a film like this one.
This is a charming, delicious film with enough diversions to preserve children fascinated, told with enough skill to support adults enthusiastic. It is a keeper, worth watching many times.

The series was cancelled and then returned 2 years later in this newer installment. Tanya Allen and Stephen Marcus were the only cast members to return for this second installment.
This note, along with it’s first season, is easily my common sci-fi series ever. The first season came out a couple of years before Joss Whedon’s powerful acclaimed “Firefly”, to which it is often compared. I regain the impression that Mr. Whedon actually might have got some of his ideas from Stahunter’s first season .

This second season, “Starhunter 2300″ however, is my accepted season of this reveal.
Imagine a sci-fi series position in plot where all the main characters are desperate and abominable! There is no politically-correct ‘prime directive’. There is no magical warp-drive or transporters or any lickety-split and easy draw to obtain to the stars. Humanity is collected mostly confined to the Solar System. Hyperspace is composed the stuff of theoretical physics, unreliable pseudoscience, and the obsession of a Mensa-like organization of elitists called “The Orchard”. The Solar System is impossible to police. The last thing resembling a police force rebelled and became the Raiders, scattered ‘clans’ who raid colonies, remove children (many of the novel Raiders became sterile due to something like a futuristic Gulf War Syndrome) and hurry great of the prostitution and drug business in the solar system.

This second season, “Starhunter 2300″ features much-upgraded special effects, compared to the new Starhunter. Even the trip-hop theme music and the sullen ambiente incidental music are a tremendous improvement.
The series begins where the first season’s cliffhanger ending left off, but don’t exertion if you didn’t glimpse the first season, the disorientation of not shimmering what’s going on put’s you in a area to easily portray to the main characters and their spot. You have to glean your contrivance around, worthy as the characters themselves do.
The year is 2300, 15 years after the time of the first season. Percy (Tanya Allen) finds herself alone on the Tulip, a delapidated passe space-cruiseship that has been her home for most of her life. It’s a shame that the series itself was plagued by a severe lack of promotion and lack of interest on the piece of some of it’s distinguished network investors. Sadly, on the verge of commencing a unusual season of shooting, the production was abruptly shut down, without any warning. If you like this series as worthy as I did, then you’ll be wishing that it had been allowed to continue. I catch myself watching this box-set end-to-end, again and again and I aloof can’t derive another series that I have enjoyed this noteworthy.

But I did savor this whole series. Especially towards the waste, however as the other reviewer stated, production does lack a limited, but the stories fabricate up for it in spades (along with the Palatable Tanya Allen, she is so friggin cute) .
Basically it’s like watching a slightly less enthralling Firefly with British accents. If you like Crusade, Firefly, B5 etc. this is a qualified addition to that genre drawer (fellow DVD compulsives) . Any sci-fi fan would luxuriate in these stories on some level.

This movie, unlike its predecessor, “THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO”, is an unusual, fun fragment of nostalgia. If you enjoyed the TV present, this movie was a broad gathering of the best characters for a full-length romp around the world.
Brains invents something no one takes seriously – an airship. Yet despite the ridicule he suffers for his insane conception, the company built it. And it’s lumber to be a colossal success with the wealthy who want to combine a coast with a flight around the world.
Meanwhile, Brains is given the task of creating a original rescue craft – Thunderbird 6. This means he can’t go on the maiden voyage. A must gawk film from the 60’s, this is the ultimate Thunderbirds experience. All the action of the series, with tall character development. The special effects and music are what we have approach to interrogate. Thrilling, comic, and in the waste, meaningful.

In the romantic comedy CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945), Sydney Greenstreet is third billed leisurely Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan. Miss Stanwyck’s character was based on Gladys Taber, a ladies magazine columnist who lived on a Connecticut farm. John Dehner cameos as a area trooper. IT HAPPENED ON FIFTH AVENUE (1947) was the very first ALLIED ARTISTS release. This company was formed when MONOGRAM Pictures and two smaller outfits merged. Frank Capra was slated to voice until producer-director Roy Del Ruth purchased cloak rights to this account of a homeless man and his friends who purchase advantage of a manson left empty while the owners are away for the holidays. The fair cast includes Don DeFore, Ann Harding, Charles Ruggles, Victor Veteran, Gale Storm, Grant Mitchell, Edward Brophy and Alan Hale Jr.
Ernst Lubitsch’s holiday romance THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940) was a first camouflage adaptation of Hungarian playwright Miklós László’s “Perfumerie” (aka “Illatszertár”) . This storyline was later old for the 1949 musical, IN THE Agreeable Mature SUMMERTIME and in 1998 for YOU’VE GOT MAIL. Director Lubitsch, who also worked in a Budapest shop as a boy, called this his approved movie. Unlike most productions, all scenes were filmed sequentially. Cast includes Margaret Sullavan, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Morgan, Joseph Schildkraut and in a walk-on, Sarah Edwards.
Christmas in Connecticut is a grand holiday romantic comedy about a young woman who writes for a magazine geared to homemakers. She claims to be married, have a child and live on a farm in Connecticut, but is actually a single, childless, apartment dweller. The problems originate when her publisher wants her to give a current war hero a home for the holidays on her Connecticut farm. She consents to marry a long-time boyfriend who actually has a farm in Connecticut to put her editor from losing his job. They arrange to be married on the farm, but the contemplate doesn’t net the job done before the war hero arrives. That creates some awkward moments. The housekeeper tends babies for women who are working during the war, and they are supposed to be “the child” but with a different baby showing up each day confusion ensues. Stanwyck’s character, of course, begins to plunge for the hero, who is also falling for her but thinks she is a married woman and is trying to respect that. It is all excellent, well-organized fun and “What a Christmas!”
The Shop Around the Corner is a very clever comedy whose theme has been repeated in other movies, as mentioned in Annie’s review. Clara is falling for the man with whom she corresponds on purely incandescent subjects. She has never met him. At the same time she gets a job in a leather goods shop and cannot glean along with her boss (Jimmy Stewart) . You can figure it out from there. Delectable fun. Either one of these two movies is worth the ticket of this package.
It Happened on 5th Avenue is a first-rate film. The owner of a 5th Avenue mansion is wintering elsewhere and a hobo helps himself to the house. He invites in others who need a location to cease in the housing crunch following WWII. Without their knowledge, one of their fellow tenants is actually the owner, who hides his identity to gawk what is going on in his home.
Everyone knows the tale of A Christmas Carol, so I won’t clarify on this one. This is a fantastic station of holiday movies at a designate that can’t be beat. If you don’t like unlit and white movies this may not satisfy you, but the stories are gargantuan and my family really enjoys them. The only complaint I have is that they are double-sided disks and I hold single sided.

I can’t recommend this film highly enough for children of all ages! Although the computer animation is a puny stiff (the characters don’t travel very fluidly at times), the artwork is delicate, with eye-popping color! Especially pleasing are the intricate mosaics decorating the homes in the Arab kingdom — Americans may not be aware that Islamic culture forbids drawings of people, hence in this film as in many famed valid world mosques Arabs developed incredibly detailed geometric tile patterns for decoration.

This film has an valid message of tolerance for other cultures and cooperation (since our heroes wouldn’t succeed without attend from one another and wise men and women from several different nations and religions) . It also has very strong female characters, from the heroes’ mother/nanny (who explains how she ignores prejudice and superstition to disappear forward and collect), to the adorable Princess Chamsous Sabah, who exhibits the best demonstration of a wonderful princessing education I’ve ever seen on film!
Some American sensibilities may be set off by the nanny nursing her infant children at her breast in the beginning of the film, or the scene of Asmar disgustedly eating carrion when he is lost in the desert and on the brink of starvation; but I’d hope most adults would be sparkling enough to stare and define this with their kids, rather than unprejudiced hiding it. These brief scenes are a section of the mosaic of life, and hiding the world from children only stunts them in the long bustle.
We saw this movie on the expansive conceal, and I can’t wait to possess my acquire copy. As the parent of a 7 year obsolete, we’ve seen a lot of children’s movies (the well known Pixar and Disney titles as well as arthouse and foreign films for kids) . In my plan, this is the most beautifully made, and well told, sharp film ever. That’s a beautiful high bar, I know, but I don’t believe I’m raising any fraudulent expectations.

This was an essential and personal project for John Ford (whose right name was Sean O’Feeney) . That his heart and those of his cast members were in what they were doing shows through. The fact that great of the film was shot on status in Ireland (on site shoots were somewhat fresh at the time) also adds an authentic flavor.
Barry Fitzgerald was at his comedic best here, and Ward Bond’s performance as a priest has several simply unforgettable moments.
The Collected Man is a charming classic and among Ford’s best (in fact, it won him an Oscar for Best Director) . It’s comical, romantic, and always piquant. It also features an exuberant regain (courtesy of Victor Young) and one of the longest and most memorable knock-down, drag-out fights ever committed to film.

Two different editions of this DVD have been released with almost
identical packaging. Be careful which one you prefer! (I wish I’d known this) .“John Wayne Collection” edition (*1 star)
This is the one I bought (ISBN 0-7820-1057-1, ASIN: B00000I1KV) . It has “John Wayne Collection” printed on a green band at the top. Its special features include “The Making of the Smooth Man” documentary & the theatrical trailer. DON’T Choose THIS VERSION, PLEASE. The sound is decent, but the recount is absolutely terrible: blurry and rotund of splotches, almost unwatchable.
“Collector’s Edition”
Apparently, the sound and represent quality are okay on the “Collector’s Edition” DVD (ASIN: B00006JMRD), whose special features include Commentary by Maureen O’Hara, the theatrical trailer, “The Joy of Ireland” documentary with Maureen O’Hara, “Remembering The Unexcited Man” Montage, and “The Making of The Unruffled Man.”
I will not, as some feel considerable, go over the story/characters/performances of this film. Suffice to say, this is one the most scrumptious films ever made, blarney or not.
Rather, what I would like to briefly comment on is the utterly pathetic transfer of this classic film to DVD. It states quite clearly on the succor of the shroud that this film has been digitally remastered. I took that to mean both video and audio. Disagreeable. The characterize quality of this DVD is frightening, one of the worst I have ever seen. Own me when I say this — the VHS version I purchased in 1991 has a better video clarity than this. At times it’s actually difficult to acquire out the actors features. The company gradual this, ARTISAN I fill they are called, should be ashamed. I have a copy of the recently released and remastered CASABLANCA DVD. That film was made in 1942, yet it looks as if it was unbiased made, such is the sharpness of the video. The Smooth Man deserved the same treatment, but didn’t obtain it. Shame on ARTISAN.
