Average customer review:
Wings of Desire is available for streaming or downloading.
No movie that I seek on a regular basis makes me feel so powerfully the joy of being alive as this one. Although many films and numberless and sappy television shows since 1987 have obsolete angels of one terrible sort or another, Wim Wenders managed to success while all the others failed. Working from a record by notorious writer Peter Handke, Wenders takes angels that seem to have more in current with Rilke’s Duino Elegies than the Bible or the Original Age angels. Their function is to scrutinize and survey and characterize, and in their occupy runt fashion, to comfort and commiserate. The trick wasn’t to reach up with the gimmick of angels being able to listen to the thoughts of humans, but to perform those thoughts exquisite and representative of all that is quintessentially human. The trick wasn’t to have the angels peep in sad and white and the humans in color, but in making what was seen, whether two or many toned, elegant. One has only to peep the absolutely appalling CITY OF ANGELS, an English language remake starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage, to watch that having gimmicks isn’t enough; you must have substance as well.
This is not a perfect film. There are some listless moments, and I thoroughly disapprove a couple of moments in the film, in particular, Dommartin’s speech to Bruno Ganz in the bar advance the ruin of the film. But there are so many delicate moments, so many moments where they not merely catch something factual, but design a moment of almost transcendent beauty, that WINGS OF DESIRE provides more than entertainment, but something akin to a reason to live. The movie becomes in the destroy a celebration of life, of all the tawdry elements that go into being human. The movie ends in affirming nearly as many things as Walt Whitman does in “Song of Myself.”
I adore the cast. Bruno Ganz is perfect as Damiel, the central angel of the epic. Likewise, Otto Sander’s face is the perfect receptacle for all that he witnesses on his calm rounds through Berlin, while Solveig Dommartin is so sympathetic a character, so exquisite, that one could imagine an angel or anyone else yearning to be with her. And Peter Falk turns in a remarkably quirky character role, playing himself on site in Berlin. The city itself emerges as a major actor, providing what is clear to stand as the last colossal visual representation of Berlin in the last couple of years before the Wall fell. Curt Bois was a archaic character actor who was a staple in Hollywood films in the 1930s and 1940s, playing a spacious number of waiters and tailors and hotel clerks (he plays the pickpocket at the very beginning of CASABLANCA) . In what would be the last role before his death, Bois appropriately plays “Homer,” the outmoded man remembering all that had occurred in Berlin in the past several decades, playing the role of human gaze to counterbalance the angelic witnesses.

This film and UNTIL THE Ruin OF THE WORLD, a Wenders film that followed this one in 1991 have to have two of the best soundtracks I have encountered. Subtract either “Six Bells Chime” by Crime and the City Solution or “From Her to Eternity” by Carve Cave, and this would have been far less of a film, and the scene where Solveig Dommartin changes in her trailer while listening to Prick Cave do “The Carny” might be the best scene in the film.
I first saw Wings of Desire in 1988. It is impossible to hiss someone what this movie is about. They best scheme to relate it is to drawl that you will learn from it. It shows you what it is to be alive, savor life, and to drop in esteem with the world around you. Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander are blooming! They fit very well together. Solveig Dommartin was a joy to spy. Her expend of multiple languages to exhibit her thoughts and emotions was very well done. Curt Bois fit into his role 100% and was gracious. Peter Falk was a radiant addition to the film and also fit nicely with his consume of English and a shrimp bit of German. This movie teaches about Frosty War Berlin and the wall that divided the city. It teaches you to strive for what you desire in life because you can derive it if you really want it. Wim Wenders and Peter Handke were geniuses with fitting all of this together. This movie is totally not Hollywood style. There is no sappy romance or most of the cast getting shot to death in brutal ways. There is no script cast in stone. It pulls at your heart and your mind and never becomes stupid or lifeless. It does not jabber you step by step the area. It gives basic ideas and lets you resolve in your heart how you will feel the film. Wim Wenders is lustrous! Berlin has changed so grand since Wings of Desire was released. Wim Wenders has kind of frozen time and preserved this era of Berlin for us. It does not note Berlin as some attractive majestic town like a Hollywood film would. It shows how the people are a kind of eclectic group kind of pushed together and pulled apart in this walled off land. Wim Wenders gives a lot of unhurried the scenes info in the angels among us piece of the DVD. Wim Wenders’ director’s commentary is priceless. He answered questions that have been in my head for the last 15 years. He is very worthy with all information and takes a lot of time to clarify all. A Hollywood director would never do this! The DVD is like a double feature. The movie (in German) is one section and the film history, historical city data, and personal information (in English) provided by Wim Wenders about Berlin makes a second portion.
Wings of Desire is a nice film for German students. Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander lisp German beautifully and determined. They consume every day vocabulary so it gives valid practice with sentence construction.
Do not bother with the American version City of Angels. Maybe it is easier for us in the U.S. since it is in English but it was a complete end of film. The American version kills, more like savagely butchers, all the Wings of Desire cast worked so hard for.

I would give the DVD 10 stars if I could.

Customer Reviews:
Great waterproof camera

I’ve been playing with my new Powershot D10 for about a week and really like it. I have been using Canon SLRs for 25+ years, AE1 Program, A1, Elan 7e, and Digital Rebel. When I started looking for a waterproof camera to take snorkeling, my first choice was Canon, based on my many years of satisfaction with their products, and I was very lucky that this camera was released two weeks before leaving for vacation. (Amazon had been showing the camera as available for pre-order until earlier today. I purchased mine from a local camera store.)I’m very impressed with the picture quality on this camera. The 12 megapixel sensor, coupled with a dozen shooting modes, produce an excellent image. I’m used to controlling aperture and shutter speed on the SLR, so simply selecting “portrait” or “night exposure” mode and letting the camera do all the work just seems too easy. Or, if selecting “portrait” is too difficult, you can select “auto” and just let the camera do it all. Movie quality is also quite good. The LCD screen on the back of the camera seems huge compared to the 1″ screen on my old Digital Rebel. It’s a great display.
The controls are conveniently arranged, and easy to use, and the associated icons displayed are both informative and intuitive. You can choose to display all the settings or turn them off and just see the image. One of the useful display options is a grid overlay on the screen to assist with shot composition and the “Rule of Thirds.” The optical zoom works great. By the time you get to 12x with the digital zoom, the image is kind of grainy, but that’s to be expected.
You can take macro photographs an inch or two from your subject. I’ve had trouble focusing my Digital Rebel in the dark, but Canon seems to have improved low-light focusing quite a bit. It has a manual focus feature that indicates the distance to the subject as you adjust the focus, just in case it can’t get the focus right.
I like the Panorama feature, which displays the previous shot on the viewfinder while you’re composing the next shot, allowing the photographer to closely match subsequent shots, resulting in panoramic photos with less distortion when they’re stitched together. Panorama mode also locks in the exposure value of the first shot so that the exposure in subsequent shots all match the first shot.
The face recognition and blink detection both seem to work well. As the camera focuses, it will zoom in on one of the faces so the photographer can verify correct focus. After the shot is taken, if someone blinked it will identify the face of the person blinking so you can take another shot. These can be turned on or off according to user preference. Images seem very crisp, which I attribute to the image stabilization features, which can also be turned on or off.
I’ve had the camera in the sink, and it handles six inches of water with no problems. I’ll see how it does with thirty two and a half more feet of water when it meets the Atlantic Ocean in a few weeks! The wrist strap attaches to any one of the four corners of the camera (convenient for carrying in either left or right hand) and seems to be pretty secure, so no worries about losing it if you get knocked over by a wave.
I use Photoshop Elements, so I haven’t loaded the Canon software and can’t comment on that. And since I edit photos on the computer, I doubt that I’ll use some of the in-camera editing features, such as black and white, sepia, color swap, and the various color enhancements. I could see that would be useful to those who print directly from the camera, without editing on a computer.
The camera doesn’t allow you to shoot in RAW. I generally don’t shoot in RAW with my SLR, so that doesn’t worry me. It has a number of white balance modes, custom white balance, and auto white balance. It seems to do a good job selecting the correct shooting conditions in auto mode. Colors appear correct.
A couple of drawbacks: The camera isn’t threaded so you’re not able to attach filters. There’s also no lens cap, and I worry about the lens surface getting damaged. For a rugged “adventure” camera, I’m also surprised that there’s no GPS chip so that photos can be tagged with the exact location. I look at old slides taken while I was hiking and think “that’s neat, why can’t I remember where I took that.” It would be nice if the EXIF data included lattitude and longitude. (Watch Canon come out with the Powershot D10 “Gold” six months from now that incorporates these features. The curse of being an early adopter.)
The microphone picks up every movement your fingers make as you hold the camera, so it’s difficult to capture movies without some camera noise. The speaker on the bottom of the camera is also difficult to hear when playing movies back on the camera, but movies sounds fine when I pop the memory chip into the computer and watch in Quicktime. Movies are produced in the .mov format, so you’ll have to do some conversion if you want to do anything with it in Windows Movie Maker. You can also choose between higher quality 640 x 480, or lower quality 320 x 240. (I should post a video review, but look like a dork in movies, so I’ll spare everybody that.)
Tried to take a few infrared photos, but the image has the Hot Spot typical of many Canon cameras and lenses. I held a Hoya R72 filter over the lens and took several shots. Bright sunlight is about a 4″ exposure, and all shots have a bluish circle in the center.
The drawbacks are very minor compared to the great images this camera produces.
I’m very impressed with this camera. It feels very sturdy, takes great photos, and seems very easy to use. Although I’ll probably continue to use my Digital Rebel as my primary camera, I certainly look forward to many years of fun with this camera.
Finally, a “full service” waterproof camera for all those fun-filled vacations, let the kids go crazy!

So many of our family’s vacations are at beaches, lakes, water-parks, or hikes and bringing along the sensitive digital camera has always been a problem. If I carried it then I could not get in water and I spent more time worrying whether the sand would damage it than taking pics of my family. I lost a camera on a Disney Park fun ride when water suddenly splashed into the ride and we were miserable for losing all our pics. With this camera you can drop it in water and not worry about your pics unless you lose the camera (happened to me another time when I fell overboard and dropped a camera in the open sea). I have other cameras that I have been too lazy to review but I am excited about this one so I sat down to write this review. This is like a regular Canon Camera with all the features and the added waterproof feature. It can be compared to the new SD780 IS which sells for fifty bucks less. The features are similar, except that this one is waterproof and bulkier and does not have a viewfinder (not that you can see much through a fogged up viewfinder in humid conditions).
Some great features:
- Good looking waterproof camera, “cuteness” is very important, I disliked those clear cases that you have to screw on your camera and as one reviewer reported they can still get fogged up
- Rainproof/Waterproof up to 33 ft, good for most pools or waterparks
- Freeze proof lens up to 14 deg F
- SMART Auto mode that detects the right scene mode for each shot (works great)
- Digic 4 processor, auto shots are nicer than some older Canon cameras, optical image stabilization and motion detection to prevent blurring of images
- 2.5 inch extra bright LCD that’s covered by a protective surface to prevent scratches and looks good in bright sun
- 3X optical and 12X digital zoom
- Face detection
- “Blink” detection – the camera gives a blink warning if someone’s eyes are closed in the picture
- Contrast correction – Can be set while taking picture or even afterward to correct darker areas
- Continuous shooting lets you capture the perfect water shot
- Scene modes – The auto mode does a good job of sensing the conditions but if you want to set a mode you get the choice of – Night exposure, Panorama (stitch together shots in one), programmable mode, portrait, sunset, beach, fireworks, aquarium, underwater, snow, indoor, kids and pets, foliage, long shutter, color accent (keep only one color in a pic, so the water and jeans will be blue while the people black and white) and color swap (change one color to another, swap the color of your boat from beige to red).Negatives:
- Slightly bulkier than your typical Canon SD, it’s built for water, beach and rugged use, and it’s rounder shape with no hard edges can take a fall or two
- No threads for filters
- No RAW mode
- No lens cap but the glass shield is scratchproofThe back panel is pretty intuitive and you probably won’t need the manual to figure it out. The buttons have been designed for waterproof operations and the zoom in and out is done through buttons on the back of the camera rather than with the shutter button lever like with other Canon cameras. The photo and video mode is toggled through a round button next to the shutter button.
The best thing about this camera? You can give it to your 6 year old to take underwater pics and not worry about it, how many other “real” cameras can you do that with?! Now I can float down that lazy river at the water park with my family and take some nice shots rather than running along the edge trying to capture the perfect moment. And the best thing is that this camera works just as well on land. It’s the perfect no-nonsense take along everywhere (really every where!) vacation camera.
Water leaked in

I was disappointed in the fact that the camera does not have a setting for action shots. Used it for first time in Hawaii as I stood in the surf and took photos of son standing on boogie board. Generally the photos for other circumstances are good.Really disappointed when I used the camera in just two feet of water, just to take a photo of my son ducking his head under the water. The next day the camera was kaput, with the viewing screen obviously damaged by water. The areas inside the battery compartment and USB port appeared to be dry, so the water apparently came in elsewhere. Leaving these camera doors open dried out the screen, and the camera would turn on but work no further than that.

DIGIC 4 Image Processor has evolved Face Detection Technology that tracks the faces of moving subjects and lets the shooter enter the frame seamlessly with the Face Detection Self-Timer.

DIGIC 4 Image Processor
Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, delivers evolved Face Detection Technology that keeps every face in every photo looking its very best. The technology finds and tracks the faces of moving subjects until you’re ready to shoot, then delivers perfect focus. In addition, exposure, flash and white balance are compensated, so that faces exhibit natural skin tones and backgrounds are properly exposed.iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 image processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
A Face Detection Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include the photographer’s face in a group shot, there’s no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, specify Face Detection Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer’s face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. Motion Detection tracks moving subjects in a much larger range–allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing.

Intelligent Contrast Correction
DIGIC 4 also makes possible the i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition. The PowerShot D10 can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
1) Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
2) The PowerShot D10 can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.Life doesn’t give you second chances to capture special times. That’s why the PowerShot D10 features ISO 1600 setting that reduces the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO can be expanded to 3200 when you select ISO 3200 Special Scene mode.

12.1 megapixels, plus 3x optical zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilizer
With the PowerShot D10, dramatic, personal pictures have never been easier to shoot and share. This 12.1-megapixel camera lets you create impressively large photos of family and friends you’ll be proud to display. The high-resolution images taken by the D10 can be enlarged up to 13 x 19 inches.
The PowerShot D10 has a 3x optical zoom that gives you the power to shoot distant subjects with razor-sharp precision and stunning lifelike color.
The PowerShot D10 is equipped with Canon’s acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer Technology that automatically detects and corrects camera shake–one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you’ll be proud to shoot and share. And Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer Technology is so convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash.
Blink Detection
Nothing ruins a great picture more than having your subjects’ eyes closed. That’s why the PowerShot D10 is equipped with Blink Detection. If closed eyes are detected, a “blink warning” icon appears for 3 seconds, allowing you to retake the shot before your subject or subjects move on. Blink Detection provides you with extra assurance when capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments like planting the flag at the summit of the mountain.Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper settings
Just set the Canon PowerShot D10 to Smart AUTO and you’re ready for maximum enjoyment from your picture taking every time. It’s a relaxing and satisfying way to shoot because you can completely concentrate on your subject knowing that the camera has the technical details covered. Advanced Canon technology intelligently analyzes your situation and shooting conditions. Then it automatically selects an appropriate setting from 18 specially defined settings. So whether you’re photographing flowers, a captivating sunset, or your friends at the park, you can be confident that you’re getting dramatic, memorable images.Shooting Modes

This is an genuine note, and I highly recommend it. The characters are so fabulous that you will section their joys and sorrows as though they were your enjoy.
“The Golden Girls” continued to pour on the laughs as it went into Season Five. For this season the note had something current. The modern writing team that wrote many of the episodes of “The Golden Girls” during its first four seasons decided to leave and pursue other projects. So a current staff of writers came on to write the episodes, and for the most fragment did a very suited job. However, Season Five was slightly weaker than the previous four seasons. While most the episodes for the fifth season did have its allotment of tall laughs, there were a few episodes that seemed to lack the comedy that all the episodes from the first four seasons had, and this seemed sure with a recent writing team. On the radiant side, director Terry Hughes was encourage to bid the episodes, but Season Five would eventually be his final season at the helm of “The Golden Girls”. His directing of the episodes in Season Five kept this expose on top. After he left, the display started to lose a petite of its greatness and silly edge in its final two seasons.
SEASON FIVE (1989-90)
The recent writing team of “The Golden Girls” tried to do some modern things to retain this point to at the top of its game, and throughout Season Five came up with some helpful ideas and a original ongoing storyline. That storyline was Rose meeting a charming guy who would become her current boyfriend. That charming guy was Miles, who was wonderfully played by Harold Gould. Gould, who guest starred in the third episode of “The Golden Girls” draw wait on in its first season, was terrific in this role and turned up in a couple of episodes in Season Five. This storyline with Rose and Miles was a winner. It was a exiguous change of fling that the point to needed. Episodes animated Rose and Miles included: when they originate going out for the first time and Rose thinks she’s too boring for his taste, and when Miles introduces Rose to his daughter and his daughter tells Rose to finish away from him because he hasn’t gotten over the loss of his wife. Other qualified episodes in Season Five included: Dorothy becoming very ill and going to several different doctors who can’t accept out what’s imperfect with her; Blanche’s daughter coming to visit and telling her mother that she’s going to have a baby via artificial insemination; Dorothy begins to date a lawyer who also has a gig as a circus clown; Blanche dealing with the death of her father; Dorothy helping out a pregnant teenage girl and trying to win the girls’ father (who’s thrown her out) to step in and serve her out too; Rose getting tested for the HIV virus; Dorothy hosting Stan’s Communist cousin who comes to Miami for a visit; Dorothy becoming addicted to gambling; and the girls preparing to meet the President of the United States.“The Golden Girls” domination at the Emmy Awards ended after being shut out for its fourth season, but the nominations didn’t end. For Season Five, the prove got 8 nominations, including another nod for Best Comedy Series. This was also the first time that Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan were all not nominated together for Best Actress in a Comedy Series like they were for the first four seasons. This time, only White was nominated, while Arthur and McClanahan were passed over. Estelle Getty was nominated again for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and deservedly so. She should have won three or four Emmys for her role as Sophia. Also recognized again was director Terry Hughes, who received directing nominations for all five seasons of “The Golden Girls”, winning on his second nomination for Season Two. His last “Golden Girls” directing nomination was for the Season Five episode titled “Triple Play”, which was one of the best directed episodes that I’ve ever seen. This episode deals with three totally different storylines that tie up neatly at the end: Rose meeting Miles’ daughter; Blanche’s backfired attempt at meeting men by renting a ragged car and pretending that its for sale, and all the men become more fervent in the car than in going out with her; and Dorothy dealing with Sophia, who has stolen government money.
Some of the guest stars from Season Five of “The Golden Girls” include: Dick Van Dyke as Dorothy’s lawyer boyfriend who also does double duty as a circus clown in the episode “Savor Under the Enormous Top”; Jeffrey Tambor (“Arrested Development”) as one of the doctors who can’t catch the illness that Dorothy comes down with in fragment 1 of the episode “Sick and Tired”; Geraldine Fitzgerald (who guest starred on an episode of “The Golden Girls” in Season Three) as Sophia’s friend who plans to commit suicide in the episode “Not Another Monday”; Robert Mandan (“Soap”) as Blanche’s novel beau who suffers a heart attack in the episode “Astronomical Expectations”; Heed Moses (“Desperate Housewives”) as a young man who claims to be the illegitimate son of Blanche’s unhurried husband in the episode “An Illegitimate Misfortune”; Eddie Bracken as Rose’s first worship in the episode “Twice in a Lifetime”; Barbara Babcock (“Hill Street Blues”) as Blanche’s sister who comes to Miami as the newest author of a book that seems to be about Blanche’s life, and Marian Mercer (“It’s a Living”) as Stan’s Communist cousin who complains about everything in America (except 7-Eleven Slurpees) in the episode “Sisters and Other Strangers”; Jerry Orbach (“Law & Order”) as a guy Dorothy dated from the past in the episode “Cheaters” (this same character was featured in an episode of Season One and was played then by Alex Rocco) ; and Timothy Stack (“Night Stand”) as a government agent trying to bag information on the girls before the arrival of the U.S. President in the episode (“The President’s Coming! The President’s Coming!”)
I have rated “The Golden Girls”: The Complete Fifth Season 5 stars. But if Amazon.com have 1/2 star ratings to rate from, I would have rated Season Five 4 1/2 stars, because to me the fifth season of my popular present of all time wasn’t quite up there with Seasons One through Four. But that doesn’t mean that Season Five is unpleasant. No contrivance! There’s lots to like in Season Five, and (of course) I highly recommend it to the show’s biggest fans.
Now I’m anxiously awaiting Season Six.
